Out to LunchZapiro cartoon…Is it about Prophets or Profits?Sunday, May 23, 2010

The late Steve Irwin, better known as the Crocodile Hunter, made his name and a very good living from taking chances with dangerous animals. His favourite trick would be to get near the snapping jaws of a crocodile while the camera was rolling. His fame spread and he decided to get close to other dangerous animals until he met his untimely end by swimming underwater with a dangerous ray. Since then virtually every programme on National Geographic or Animal Planet features some whacko getting close to dangerous animals for our pleasure and amusement. Steve Irwin upped the game and these days no television network would pay for a documentary on the life of lions, however well filmed, unless there was some obvious danger to the presenter. Series with names like “The 10 most poisonous snakes” invariably have an episode where the presenter gets bitten and has to be given anti serum after being flown by helicopter to the nearest hospital. But even the most ratings conscious wildlife presenter isn’t going to risk getting bitten by something that can kill you in two minutes…..just in case he can’t get the lid off the anti serum.
Last week Zapiro, South Africa’s most publicity hungry cartoonist, drew a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him). Predictably there was an outcry and there have apparently been death threats aimed at the editor of the Mail and Guardian and the cartoonist. Both claim that this is all about freedom of speech but it isn’t and let me tell you why. The cartoon was apparently drawn because someone decreed that last Thursday should be “Draw the prophet Mohammed day”. That in itself is an obviously inflammatory action because the furore the followed the Danish cartoons of the prophet several years ago made it perfectly clear that many devout muslims don’t like their prophet depicted as a cartoon figure. So to deliberately annoy a large group of people by suggesting that we do something they don’t like is particularly insensitive. Why not just call it “piss off a humourless muslim day”? By drawing the cartoon in the M&G Zapiro has effectively said to muslims that he doesn’t give a rat’s arse about their sensibilities. That, at least, is the interpretation of many. It’s too glib to dismiss this and say that muslims should get a sense of humour. I’m sure many muslims do have a sense of humour but it’s arrogant to assume that a sense of humour should extend to the deliberate mocking of their religion by someone from another religion. Knowing the situation Zapiro was plain dumb to draw that cartoon and Nic Dawes showed a lack of judgment in my opinion by running it. On the pure press freedom argument of course we should be allowed to do such things but there are greater issues at the moment that argue against that. We are about to host the FIFA World Cup and last week there was a story that Al Qaeda had plans to launch a terrorist attack on stadiums. So how clever is it to run a cartoon so near to the World Cup which any idiot knows will antagonize muslims? And what about the safety of the people who work at the Mail and Guardian and of the paper’s neighbours (of which I am one). If (heaven forbid) their offices were to be bombed by some deeply offended extremist will the twisted, bleeding bodies of innocent M&G staff have been worth the sacrifice in the name of press freedom? I don’t believe so. So why did Zapiro draw a not particularly funny cartoon of the prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) talking to what is obviously a Jewish psychiatrist up in heaven? Did he do it to deliberately upset muslims? Did he do it to point out that the prophet is no big deal and in need of psychiatric help? I don’t believe he did and I don’t believe Nic Dawes (the M&G editor) ran the cartoon with that purpose in mind. They did it for the money. It’s well known that newspapers are floundering and losing ground to innovative and dynamic websites like Newstime. So every once in a while they have to come up with a publicity stunt to sell papers. One of the more recent was the announcement that Julius Malema had R51 million in his bank account and was being funded by someone. Have you seen anything to substantiate that claim in the past few weeks in any of the newspapers? No….neither have I. The ill judged Zapiro cartoon is more about profits than prophets. If more people went out and bought the M&G last Friday a sub editor’s job might be saved. But more importantly, it gets people talking about how brave Zapiro is and don’t we newspaper people love our egos to be inflated? Unfortunately cheap publicity stunts do occasionally go horribly wrong and this seems to be a good example of that. Bearing in mind the deep offence caused it might be advisable for both Zapiro and Dawes to eat humble pie on this one, offer a groveling apology and make a substantial donation to a worthy muslim cause.

Very well said. I am glad to see that there still are good people out there who respect other religions and cultures. Zapiro definitely does not fall into that category. Surely Zapiro would be offended if someone mocked at him, his family or the things that he considers sacred (if any). No amount of money could compensate for the emotional pain caused.
I feel the Mail and Guardian should really be taken to task... i feel that the individuals who were active in printing this cartoon should be taken to task and some form of punishment should be instituted such as not being allowed to work for any media related companies for the next 10 years. The thing is, muslims are not as filthy hearted as the world perceives them to be. Yes you get a few rotten apples in every pack, but that then goes for every religion and country. This Al Qaeda threat is nothing but America trying to turn people against the muslims. I think America should sort out the problems in their own back yard first before trying to 'interfere' in South Africa. In South Africa, we have a bigger threat than Al Qaeda, and it is our own people - striking, stealing, killing, shoplifting. Every South African knows that... why does America give us added stress about Al Qaeda? So people please.... MUSLIMS ARE NOT TERRORISTS, SO STOP PORTRAYING THEM AS SUCH !!! and that includes our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), just leave him and the muslims alone and let them live their life the way they want to which is peacefully ! Every single muslim in the world knows that islam places extreme importance on peace, peace not only to muslims, but to everyone. Why then go and cause a stir and test our patience? As in everything in life, there is a limit. Every person, every religion has limits, so dont single out islam and the muslims please.

David - did you see what happened in Lahore today. A group of upset Muslims decided that another group of muslims where not muslim enough so decided to kill them. Almost worse than that is the fact that Pakistan has a law that almost encourages this type of reaction.Where are the shrieks of shock and horror from the MJC and the outraged muslim population marching in the streets? The hypocrisy is disgusting.

David, you make some interesting points. However, I think what we are witnessing are the non-Muslim folk rebelling against the strict censor and intolerance from the Muslim religion. Its the only way we can peacefully make a point. We don't believe in blowing people up and assasinating someone for drawing a picture.
Muslim males drink alcohol, watch porn and commit crimes but they get upset when we express an opionion about their religion in a non-violent way? If they can break their laws then surely we also have a right to have our say as well.

The cartoon was in bad taste , no question about it . but since when don't we all understand that cotroversy sells ? It really shouldn't come as a shock to anyone esp. after freedom of the press has been abused over and over again by people who have nothing to say but want to be listened to anyway... says something about the overall standard of SA media

as expected, quick google search pulls up hundreds of anti-semetic cartoons from the arab/ muslim media. Of course most are aimed at the intolerance and violence of Isreal and to me are perfectly acceptable. Even the one of Anne Frank in bed with Hitler makes its point fairly well as it represents the OTHER SIDE of the conversation.Muslims must understand that they cannot be on a crusade to spread their religion or have it affect public policy without it being put under the microscope. When it trips over its own holiness, that is not anyones problem but its own.the catholic church is having a far rougher time at the moment and is not threatening to blow anyone up or boycottSad to see Nick Dawes has dropped his undies on this one...

"innovative and dynamic websites like Newstime".Im struggling to see what is innovative or dynamic about Newstime. Give or take a design feature or two, it is exactly like 10 000 other online news websites. Of course online news has come of age and is shoving print news aside. But the content hardly differs. The main advantage is that you get breaking news far faster; almost as fast as radio, in fact.

"He did it for the money." Nonsense. More comforting a notion than the notion that he maybe has a point. Any group could claim the same thing about any of his cartoons, which would mean hes just a money-grubber across the board -- but it is evident just by examining the palpable passion he puts into his work that his convictions are strong, and still in place.Stop jusftifying thin-skin and sloppy logic for the sake of an appearance of compassion and tolerance. Some argue "you’re right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins." His cartoon is not a swinging fist, and it’s nowhere near your nose. This is proved by the countless other groups and religions that recieve cartooned satire but don’t go into an uproar.

Shapiro is only marginally funny anymore. I find attention seeking behaviour childish and tiresome. Especially from grown ups. Why he would do this in time for someone to retaliate and wreck our Next Big Event (we arent allowed to name), is beyond me. Would he find it funny if someone drew a cartoon of the holocaust? And all of you who keep saying "Jews and Christians" - it is not politically incorrect to blame a Jewish person if he is wrong, and a Christian if HE is wrong. You don’t have to pussyfoot around Jewish people and lump Christians in on the same deal, see?

Well said...Muslims are always easy targets. Muslims are always picked on. Muslims are always linked to terrorism. Muslim people are misunderstood. Muslim people react because what we love is always being trampled on and spat upon...everybody knows that, thats why they do these things...to anger us and then blame Muslims for various crimes!!! Muslim people are feared because we are depicted incorrectly. Muslim people are not bad...and the World Cup being threatened? Where did that come from? Is that another way to blame Muslim people for something that we did not do? How sure is the Government that Muslims are responsible for 911?In General Muslim people know peace and tolerance above all. We fear Allah (SWT) and love our Beloved Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Our fear for Allah (SWT) makes us goo d people. From experience and personal knowledge, we Muslim people will give our right arm to help another in need and he does not need to be a Muslim in order for us to do that. We are humble people who are misunderstood. I wish that what we love most dearly is not tarnished...and that people would leave our Religion and Beliefs alone.

It absolutely amazes me that in this day and age and after all past generations have been through in the name of religion, that we should still get this type of behaviour that is resonant with medieval times. Why is there still a need to PROVE superiority over any other religion? Profit, fear, ignorance, arrogance - why else would there still be people out there so threatened by the beliefs of Muslims.
