Parties, or ‘functions’ as they are sometimes called, can be tricky affairs for some of us. Unless you’re incredibly rich, utterly bonkers, a monk vowed to a lifetime of silence, or the human equivalent of the hermit crab, these ‘functions’ are going to crop up periodically and upset your equilibrium because social convention requires you to a..»

Self Importance and The Obama Syndrome

President Obama and his brood have legged it to Martha’s Vineyard, the ultimate WASP holiday destination. An interesting choice for a man who is touted as the first ‘black’ leader of the United States; the lilywhite playground of the Kennedys, the Clintons, numerous Hollywood celebrities, and other members of the privileged classes. Geographic..»

Lindsay Williams is on hols this week in a place with no connectivity....lucky bloke. As an insufferable nerd in my very early teens I would make an annual pilgrimage to the Farnborough air show. Apart from being a boom time for English anorak manufacturers, the show was a giant showcase for the latest aviation and avionics products, and a..»

Some people are suggesting that I’m going all weird on them. Granted, most of the aforementioned think a bloke’s weird if he doesn’t tuck his shirt in, fails to play golf once a week, doesn’t own a home in Plettenberg Bay (or Plitt as they rather curiously call it), hasn’t a well balanced portfolio of both local and offshore shares plus a lu..»

Looking for the next Dimension Data

Back in the late Eighties, and in the year that really shaped my gloomy outlook on markets and instilled in me a love for the brutal beauty of bear markets, a company called Dimension Data was a penny stock on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. For a brief market moment, as the world went mad and Wall St melted away before our very eyes, the sha..»

When I read the headline ‘Avocado farms partially hit by cold spell’, I knew that my week was going to be a difficult one. Because of the unseasonably nippy weather (I thought it was winter?) there’s been a bit of damage to a few important crops in some areas of the country. In the case of avocados, and according to a bloke named Donkin, t..»

 Profile
Lindsay Williams started his career in a ‘boiler room’ in the City of London selling risky derivatives to dentists and widows. This experience, while useful, was soulless, and he then moved to a respectable commodity futures trading company in the West End before moving to Johannesburg in 1988, also in the commodity futures business. After stints with RMB and Greenwich, Lindsay moved into the media in 2000. First he became a prolific freelancer for FHM, then joined 702 Talk Radio as a business broadcaster and editor of the station’s money website. While at 702 Lindsay became an anchor on Summit TV, a position he held for 5 years. After leaving 702, he replaced Alec Hogg as presenter of Classic FM’s business show while still presenting on Summit.

Lindsay now lives in Cape Town and presents a business radio show on FMR101.3fm, as well as a new current affairs show, ‘Newscape’.
