Ward wins WBA belt and International Roundup

[ Reads:754 / Comments:0 / 934 ] Undefeated Olympic gold medallist Andre Ward beat Mikkel Kessler of Denmark on a eleventh round technical decision to win the WBA super middleweight belt at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California on Saturday night.
The 25-year-old Ward became the first US winner in the Super Six tournament, after Arthur Abraham stopped Jermain Taylor in Germany and Briton Carl Froch kept his WBC title with a split-decision victory over Andre Dirrell in Nottingham, England. Ward (21-0; 13) dominated Kessler (42-2; 32) whose faced was badly busted up by some unintentional head butts and punches. The scores were 97-93, 98-92 and 98-92. On the same card Jose Celaya (31-6; 16) lost a four round decision to Tony Hirsch, (10-3-1; 5) in a junior middleweight bout. Junior middleweight Karim Mayfield (11-0-1; 7) stopped Francisco Santana (11-2; 5) in the fifth round. Prospect Stan Martyniouk (8-0; 1) scored a four round unanimous decision over Anthony Martinez (21-33-3; 9) in a lightweight bout. In Kiel, Germany, unbeaten WBO light heavyweight champion Zsolt Erdei (31-0; 17) beat WBC cruiserweight champion Giacobbe Fragomeni (26-2-1; 10) on a twelve round majority decision at the Sparkassen Arena. Erdei’s speed was the winning factor as he landed many sharp combinations. Fragomeni applied pressure in the later rounds but it wasn’t enough to impress the judges. The scores were 114-114, 115-113 twice as Erdei becomes the first Hungarian to win a world title in two weight divisions. Olympic medallist Vitali Tajbert (19-1; 6) won the WBC interim super featherweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over reigning titleholder Humberto Gutierrez (26-2-1; 19). Tajbert out boxed the taller Gutierrez to win with scores of 116-112 twice and 116-113. In a clash for the vacant WBA super middleweight belt Dimitri Sartison (26-1; 17) stopped Stjepan Bozic (23-4; 14) in the fifth round when the referee on advice of the doctor called the fight off because the left eye of Bozic was swollen shut. Unbeaten WBC & WBO number one rated middleweight Gennady Golovkin (18-0; 15) dropped previously unbeaten Mikhail Makarov (10-1; 5) three times in the second round to get a stoppage win at 1:24. In Chiappas, Mexico, Filipino challenger Rodel Mayol (25-4-1; 19) scored a second round technical knockout over long reigning WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa (37-5; 21) who was making his eleventh defence, after Sosa was hurt by an unintentional head butt. After the head butt he was dropped again and the referee waved it off. In Santé Fe, Argentina, WBA interim super lightweight champion Marcos Maidana (27-1; 26) scored a third round knockout over William Gonzalez (22-6-1; 7) at the Club Deportivo Libertad in Sunchales. Gonzalez was counted out at 2:20 of the round. In Ontario, Canada, at the Casino Rama nineteen year-old Marvin Sonsona lost his WBO junior-bantamweight belt on the scales, coming in over the 52.16 kg limit. However, the Philippine fighter escaped with a draw over 12 rounds against Alejandro Hernandez (22-7-2; 11) with scores of 115-113, 113-115 and 114-114. The WBO title will remain vacant. Former IBF super-bantamweight champion Steve Molitor survived a fifth round knockdown to win with a 78-73, 79-73, 78-74 decision against Jose Saez of Argentina. In Merida, Mexico, WBA mini-flyweight champion Giovanni Segura (22-1; 18) retained his belt when he stopped Sonny Boy Jaro (30-8-5; 19) in the first round. Jaro went down and out from a body shot. In Minnesota, USA, Caleb Truax (14-0) won a hard fought ten round unanimous decision over Kerry Hope (12-2) at the Saint Paul Armoury. The scores were 97-93 on all cards. In Kissimmee, Florida, USA, number five WBO super bantamweight Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (17-0-1; 14) scored an impressive seventh round technical knockout over Genaro Garcia (36-8; 20) at the Kissimmee Civic Center to retain his WBO Latin title. In St Louis, USA, Brandon Baue won an eight round unanimous decision over Robbie Cannon at the Lumiere Casino. In Philadelphia, USA, super bantamweight Teon Kennedy (14-0-1: 6) won the vacant USBA title with a tenth round stoppage over Francisco Rodriguez (14-3-1; 8) at the legendary Blue Horizon. Rodriguez collapsed in his corner after the fight and was taken from the ring on a stretcher and rushed to a local hospital. In Lincoln, USA, at the Twin River Events Center, Joe McCreedy was not up to the task as Otis Griffin won a unanimous points decision over eight rounds with scores of 78-75, 77-76 and 78-74. In Cherkasy, Ukraine, WBA number four middleweight Avtandil Khurtsidze (20-1-2; 13) won on an eighth round technical knockout over Uzbek veteran Kuvanych Toygonbayev (30-6; 19) at the Budivelnik sports arena.
