Bye bye AFCON...Hello Absa Premiership

Tuesday the 2nd February, marks the return of the eagerly awaited Absa premiership. This is good news for local football fans.

Before I start expressing my excitement about the return of local football, I would like to congratulate the pharaohs of Egypt, for proving once more that they are the power house on the African continent.

Egypt, who beat Ghana 1-0 in Angola on Sunday, were crowned the African Cup of Nations champions, third time in a row.
The fact of the matter is when Africa takes on the World in June, Egypt will not be part of the six African countries to be represented in South Africa.

Moving right along to my favourite league, the Absa premiership has been out of action since December last year. The reminder of the league will also be a short one, as the league will come to an end on the 6 March 2010 in preparation for the biggest tournament in the world.

While it seems as though the trophy is headed to Tshwane, the Soweto giants have also not counted themselves out of the race. Supersport United are currently log leaders, with Mamelodi Sundowns on second spot and a game in hand.

The local Bafana Bafana players also camped in Durban during AfCON and took on Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Bafana Bafana won both games.
Either, this will serve the players well to have had some game time during the break or it would have been an advantage for the players to remain in their teams while their coaches plan around them for the crucial remaining games of the season. This remains to be seen.
