The true-life movie, Skin, has been nominated for Best Foreign Film award at the NAACP Image Awards (The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). Sophie Okonedo plays the lead role of Sandra Laing. She has been nominated for the Outstanding Actress award
The NAACP is one of the oldest civil rights movement in America, with the goal of ensuring "the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination". The organisation is based in Baltimore, Maryland, and its Image Award recognises achievements in arts and entertainment. The award ceremony will be held at the Shrine Auditorium on the 26th of February.

Skin is set in apartheid South Africa. The film tells the story of Sandra Laing. Sandra Laing was born in 1955 in Piet Retief. He parents and grandparents were 'white'. Her parents were members of the National Party. However, Sandra, and her brother, were 'coloured' and had 'African' features. Sandra was classified as 'white', but was shunned, by her friends, her school and the broader white community. As a teenager, she eloped with a black man to Swaziland.
Skin premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2008 and had a limited release in the USA in October 2009. The film has received rave reviews...and over 12 international awards, including:
