Melanie Nathan Feb. 4 2010: Democracy in Uganda has taken yet another turn for the worst... when yesterday two journalists, from the Daily Monitor, were arrested in Kampala for a portion of a column where they compared Uganda under President Yoweri Museveni to the Philipines under Ferdinand Marco. I have not found information on the specific charges, other than "criminal libel" ..... Inviting comments by anyone in the know... several other journalists are also facing charges. The case is pending a Supreme Court decision about "criminal Libel."
On the same day, the journalist, Angelo Izama, who wrote a piece claiming the government was gathering a paramilitary to assist the party during the next election.
