Zuma’s “Lovechildgate” story no big deal.

Here’s a philosophical puzzler for you. If whiteys hadn’t frothed and foamed at the news that President Zuma had fathered a lovechild would they have been behaving in a racist manner? If Helen Zille hadn’t commented that Zuma had put back the fight against AIDS by fathering his 20th child would she have been subscribing to the offensive stereotype whites apparently have of black men (mentioned in a famous speech by Thabo Mbeki) as incapable of keeping their trousers buttoned up when there are women around. My guess is whiteys felt obliged to register moral indignation because to do anything else would be regarded as patronizingly racist.

Fortunately I no longer have such hang ups. I have absolutely no problem with Zuma’s behaviour because I expected nothing different. I neither condone nor condemn it but, based on his previous track record in the sack, I don’t think any of us can be surprised at the revelation that he has just fathered another child. And at the age of 67 to boot which should make many men doff their hats with respect. In a society in which stressed out executives of 45 are trundling off to the local pharmacy for something to put more lead in their peckers this is something to be admired not sneered at.

And why do you think Jacob Zuma is always smiling? Compared to the miserable wretch he replaced his permanent smile and easy manner are an asset to the country. The fact that his mind might be working overtime planning his next conquest is irrelevant. He is a happy man because he is obviously getting plenty of sex. Judging by their sour expressions, some of his cabinet colleagues would be well advised to follow the President’s example and indulge in a bit of extra marital rumpy pumpy.

Interestingly the foreign newspapers made very little of the story, probably because a story about an African leader having another child is not really news. It’s only in this country that we can afford the luxury of getting worked up about such things and become morally superior. Which is all a bit ridiculous if you think about it because we don’t elect a President (and certainly not this one) on the strength of his blameless private life.

In the US and Europe things are different. Politician’s careers can be ruined if it is found that they have been having an affair with their secretary. The newspaper editors who run the stories are quite entitled to shag some pretty young sub but when you move into politics you are expected to subscribe to a wholly different moral code. So while someone like Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones can bed girls barely out of their teens and we all say, “Good old Ronnie, what a dog” a politician of similar age cannot possibly do such a thing without running the risk of having every tabloid newspaper on his doorstep.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if a prospective candidate for parliament was allowed to come clean and admit to a penchant for threesomes with girls dressed in tennis skirts while also promising to be a brilliant housing minister. Be honest…what would you prefer. A sexually repressed average housing minister or a horny goat housing minister who got things done?

Bill Clinton hung onto the US presidency by the skin of his teeth after the Monica Lewinsky affair. He looked us squarely in the face on the TV screen and told us for the last time “I did not have sexual relations with that woman”. Which was perfectly true if you don’t include fellatio in the Oval office as a sexual relationship. Fortunately the US economy was booming under Clinton and most people were happy so Clinton got to hang onto his job.

We’re in much the same situation here in SA. The economy may not be booming but the World Cup is only a few months away and the vast majority of ANC supporters seem pretty excited about that. To kick the President out now would upset the equilibrium so let him stay.

Those who frothed most at “Lovechildgate” are those who have been frothing about Zuma all along, even before Polokwane. Those who didn’t froth at all are those for whom JZ can do no wrong and those who don’t give a damn either way probably never gave a damn before. So little Zuma number 20 isn’t going to change the course of history in South Africa. And I’m prepared to bet it probably won’t be the President’s last child.

Probably the best news of all though is that the mother of JZ’s lovechild is apparently a banking executive. So Zuma screwed a banker and in a world where bankers normally screw everyone else that has to be good news.

My ancestors taught John Dube, financially supported Sol Plaatjies, were at the Kliptown Freedom Charter and have been there from the beginning.

This bunch of wankers is NOT the ANC!

Lyndall,
I know that your ancestors were there from time immemorial. I know that The ANC wouldn't exist without them. I know that they taught them everything. Because that is how super your ancestors were.

I also know that you have set yourself up as some sort of expert with regard to African cultures. And I know that you have supposedly read one or two books about it (although I don't believe that yopu actually finished them)

And I know that you listen to the radio. And I know that you read The M&G. And I know that you have black friends. And I know that you learnt Xhosa but have now forgotten it.

However, I have to unfortunately conclude that your insights are worthless. As they say .. a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

How can sex between a man and a woman be personal to the two of them when the man already has 3 wives? I do wish you would apply some logic.

"Private to the two of them" is your culture, not Zulu culture.

Why must the Zulus practice your culture?

The Dogs Bollocks,

You know wot. I think that Lyndull might be "an intellectual". Rumour has it that she went to school.
5860 Bernie Madoff  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 9:24:01 PM ]
Lyndall,
I will "belt up" when you and "Poor Old Tom" leave SA and swim towards The South Pole. Of course, it will not be long before you are forced to emigrate.

So please send me some photos of you, and Tom, with The Penguins. I want to stick them in my photo album.

(Of course you will be free to lecture the penguins but don't bore them to death as the animal rights activists will arrest you)

A marriage in African culture is not between a man and a woman but between families.

This aspect of African culture is why there is so much fraud and corruption, and why almost all their graduates emigrate.

Zuma has a large family, but much larger if you consider that any of the children of his fallen comrades can call upon him as father. Remember Zuma's daughter said at the rape trial that there were always people at his house asking for money. That is why he could not stay within his income, and why he needed the Shaiks

If you have a job and won't help a family member of this extended family you are ostracised - so often when the don't have money they give them jobs (which they are not qualified for) instead..

Then the graduates can't get jobs; and if they can the whole family descend on them for support.

If they are going to be ostracised anyhow they might as well emigrate.

Don't expect Mbeki to understand . He (like Winnie Mandela and Bishop Tutu) is Mfengu (Fingo) the first of the tribes to lose their culture and become westernised (like the American blacks)

You would know these things if you read the books that I recommend.

Bernie

Do belt up -you are just repeating the same argument, which has already been refuted over and over again.

In Zulu culture a woman who has a child out of wedlock brings shame on her family; which is why the man has to pay damages to her father.

Also in Zulu culture the child of your friend is your child. Zuma by sleeping with a friend's daughter, twice, has committed incest in their eyes.

Forget about Zuma and the mother - think of Irwin Khosa. Zuma is lucky to be alive!

And the fathers of Zuma's existing wives are probably not too happy either.
5857 Bernie Madoff  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 1:51:24 PM ]
Dogs Bollocks,
I concur.

The tripe that has been written about Zuma and his sex life can make a grown man weep with laughter. It is ridiculous on so many levels that I actually find it difficult to know where to start.

I cannot understand why the Trapidos of this world are complaining Zuma just because Zuma is some sort of Elderly Black Zulu Warrior Porn Star.
5856 David Bullard  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 10:57:01 AM ]
Sorry Bernie...I was out of the country early last week and may have missed the media feedfest. When I looked the BBC had relegated it to a small entry and when I spoke to poms they knew nothing about it. Although, to be fair, they were probably focussing on the England footer captain who has impeccable taste in shagees in my opinion. Once again, what's it got to do with anyone else where he puts his privates? So long as he doesn't bring them (the shagees that is) onto the playing field it should be his business. Lyndall....hmmmm "black intellectuals"..... up there in my book with journalistic integrity, military intelligence and honest broker. There was a chap called Mangcu who famously described himself as an intellectual until it was revealed that had been living beyond his means and was R6.5 mln in debt.
Remember the bit in "The Wind in the Willows" where Badger makes Mr Toad promise never to drive a fast car ever again. The minute Mr Toad is out of badger's library its poop poop, glorious motion and the open road. Wanna bet that JZ is going to do a Mr Toad?

Lyndall,
Since when is a lecturer in journalism at Stellenbosch "an intellectual"? I think that you are over-stating his credentials.

5853 Bernie Madoff  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 9:43:35 AM ]
Lyndall,
I think that The Blacks should get over any inferiority complexes. If you compare them to The Miserable Whites they have a lot going for them.
5852 Lyndall Beddy  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 9:43:30 AM ]
Simphiwe Sesanti, a lecturer at Stellenbosch University's Department of Journalism, wrote an article in Friday's Cape Times":
"Zuma violates the traditions he claims to love (in African Culture children must be born within marriage)" which explains the anger and why the black newspaper The Sowetan had the headline "Shame of the Nation"
5851 Bernie Madoff  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 9:38:35 AM ]
Lyndall,

I keep away from ALL Soutrh Africans. Be they black or white.

Which "black intellectuals" are you referring to?
5850 Lyndall Beddy  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 9:19:44 AM ]
David and Anthony

What a bubble you live in. Do either of you have any black friends?

The attitude of the whites is like David's (what does one more matter) or like Helen's ( the president is giving a bad example).

That is NOT the attitude of the blacks, from black intellectuals to the black poor - they are furious because they say that this is NOT the way their culture works and that Zuma is making them look ridiculous and inferior.

Read this week's Mail & Guardian - there are some very good articles about what black people on the streets and in the taxis have said to reporters.

Silly to take a light-hearted piece like this too seriously, but the serious political question is whether the frothers and non-frothers really are just the same frothers and non-frothers as before - or whether the total number of frothers are beginning to outnumber the non-frothers, even if the new frothers don't froth so much quite so frothily as the habitual frothers.
5847 Bernie Madoff  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 9:02:56 AM ]
Dogs Bollocks,
I know that some people have been asking " How does Zuma find time to run the country into the ground?"

But that just shows the energy of The Man. Moreover, he is probably delegating quite a lot of the day to day chores to Julius Malema. Whether, of course, young Julius will measure up on the "man-hood" front is another matter. Only time will tell.

BBC WEBSITE
South African President Jacob Zuma has apologised for fathering a child with a woman who was not his wife.
"I deeply regret the pain that I have caused to my family, the ANC (African National Congress), the alliance and South Africans in general," he said.
The daughter of a World Cup chief gave birth to a baby girl last year believed to have been fathered by Mr Zuma.
Mr Zuma, aged 67, is a Zulu, a group which practises polygamy. He has three actual wives and at least 19 children.

"I have over the past week taken time to consider and reflect on the issues relating to a relationship I had outside of wedlock," Mr Zuma said in a statement, admitting that it "has been a subject of much public discussion and debate".

ZUMA'S WIVES
Thobeka Madiba-Zuma - married, January 2010
Nompumelelo Ntuli - married, January 2008
Sizakele Khumalo - married, 1973
Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma - divorced, 1998
Kate Mantsho Zuma - died, 2000

"It has put a lot of pressure on my family and my organisation, the African National Congress," the statement said.
Earlier this week, the president confirmed that he was having a relationship with Sonono Khoza - the 39-year-old daughter of World Cup official Irvin Khoza.
He said the matter was "intensely personal" and dismissed as "mischievous" criticism from activists who said his actions had undermined official HIV/Aids campaigns.
Mr Zuma was praised last year when he announced major changes to the country's Aids policy, which included increasing the roll-out of anti-retroviral drugs.
But opposition parties now say his behaviour contradicts the government's stance on HIV prevention - preaching regular condom use and faithfulness to one partner.
South Africa has the highest number of HIV infections in the world - more than five million people.
This is not the first time that the president's sex life has been under the spotlight.
In 2006, while being acquitted of rape, Mr Zuma admitted that he had made a mistake by having unprotected sex with a woman he knew to be HIV-positive.
Like Ms Khoza, the woman was also the daughter of a family friend.
Mr Zuma has been married five times in all, most recently in January, and is also engaged to another woman.
He has 19 children according to his office, but it is not clear if that includes the baby born last October.

Dogs Bollocks,

Of course, The Whites in SA have a strong Calvinistic streak. So they are always preaching some nauseating morality. It is quite pathetic.

I reckon that our President is better equipped than Berlescuoni. Or Sarkozy. South Africans have a guy who is the envy of the world and all they can do is complain that he is having consensual sex with adult females!
5841 Bernie Madoff  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 8:25:46 AM ]
The Dogs Bollocks,
The story was headline news on The BBC website so it certainly did reach an international audience.

As you know, I agree with much of what you say. I have been defending Zuma 24/7 on this one.

However, I do recommend that he sees some top of the range white hookers for some variety. It would not only show that he is "right behind" a multi-racial South Africa. But it would also give some varirty to his sex life. I have a whole list of phone numbers that he could call. For starters, I would recommend a big bossomed blond. I know that JZ could check out these girls on web sites, but I do believe that it is always nice if you can get some first-hand knowledge before you call.
