Muslim outrage over US rifle scopes with New Testament inscriptions in Afghanistan

Thursday, January 21, 2010   |  Comments: 25
Muslim groups in the United States have reacted angrily to the news that rifle sights supplied by manufacturer Trijicon, which were being used in Iraq and Afghanistan, bore coded inscriptions from the Christian New Testament.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council called upon US Defense Secretary Robert Gates to immediately withdraw them from combat.

Trijicon has contracts to supply over 800,000 of the sights to the US military with a further 400 to the British.

New Zealand, like Britain, claim to have been unaware of the inscriptions and have ordered that the offending sights be removed. They confirmed that they had ascertained that Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight rifle sights used by New Zealand troops, which allow them to pinpoint targets day or night, were marked with "JN8:12," a reference to John 8:12: "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, 'I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life,'" according to the King James version of the Bible.

Trijicon, a defense contractor, was founded by devout Christian Glyn Bindon, and has confirmation on its website that it follows "biblical standards" which it says makes America great.

The problem is twofold :

Firstly all armies are made up of soldiers and other personnel from a number of different faiths and those who don't believe in religion. In accordance therewith it is standard for most not to claim to be fighting under the banner of any particular group. In this instance the sights are a direct violation of a US Central Command general order issued after the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq that strictly prohibits "proselytizing of any religion, faith or practice."

Secondly, and far more problematical, it would lend credibility to those Islamic groups who claim that the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan are little more than a Crusade in terms whereof Christians are set upon carrying out religiously-sanctioned military campaigns rather than any so-called war on extremism. In the case of Iran it would be considered a smoking gun that clearly shows why they are being singled out for special treatment on their nuclear program.

The Pentagon, instantly aware of the sensitivity of the issue, moved swiftly to try and defuse the brewing controversy by saying that it was "disturbed" by the reports.

Military Religious Freedom Foundation founder and president Michael "Mikey" Weinstein suggested that "This is the worst type of emboldenment of the enemy that you can imagine." The former White House legal counsel in Ronald Reagan's administration confirmed that they would submit a filing in US federal court in Kansas City, Missouri by February 4.

Pity I cannot download photo's on this site. I will show the opposite side of where the Terrorist AK's have the opposite inscripted on them. " In God is victory" inscripted in Arabic. making reference to the Holy Jihad. Double Standards. However the Politicians will continue to be PC and I am sure that those soldiers who have it on there weapons will be proscecuted . One has to wonder when this double standards adopted by our so called leaders will be addressed.

Its all rubbish - a storm in a teapot. JN8:12 stands for the "Jolly Nice" model sights and 8:12 is the magnification - they have zoom lenses from 8x to 12x magnification.

Hell, who cares? They work!

Trijcon should engrave "BG 11.32" to inspire Hindu soldiers:
"Therefore get up. Prepare to fight and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They are already put to death by My arrangement, and you, can be but an instrument in the fight."

Muslims have double standards, see nothing wrong in bringing Sharia to infidel lands, but always whine when infidels are openly inspired by their respective faiths!

And as a Hindu, I have no problem with inspirational quotes from Jesus.

Aren't I supposed to be the one with the rubber?

Mike,
For how long have you been having theses fantasies about Miss Beddy? Is it her rubber gear that turned you on?

Lyndall Beddy report to the headmasters office Lyndall Beddy.

Mike,
The problem is quite simple. Ms Beddy has "too many ideas". And her inability to self-censor is creating havoc with the Open Forum.

That's strictly your decision guys.

However if there are too many topics each one does get lost
870 Bernie Madoff  [ Thursday, January 21, 2010 | 10:48:09 AM ]
Mike,
I think that there is a danger in having "too many ideas". It results in an Open Forum that is a total shambles.

Lynds I accept that but be aware that your blog captures more attention.

Bern your point is valid.

I have too many ideas every day to blog them all! Which is why I use the forum!

Mike,

If I was a religious Jewish US soldier in Afghanistan, would I have a problem with the inscription or would I see it as evidence of the fact that Israel and America were fighting a war against Radical Islam.

My mother told me that she started singing and dancing when Peral Harbour was bombed. Why? Because she knew that the US would have to enter the war. Britain desperately needed American support.

On opinion issue I agree but if we don't mix it up Google blows us away as a duplicate.

In terms of Britain, US and NZ they're all backtracking furiously.

Mike,
I note that my alma mater (Britain) has ordered that the inscriptions be removed. Whatever next?

I am now waiting for The Archbishop of Canterbury to convert to Islam.

Mike,
Unfortunately, the above article underlines the problem of combining SAPA with RS. Where does SAPA start and RS end?
It is inherently problematic. As soon as you start messing around with SAPA, it inevitably becomes an opinion piece.
861 Mike Trapido  [ Thursday, January 21, 2010 | 10:00:25 AM ]
Lynds could not agree with you more.

Bernie no I don't personally think Bible inscriptions are a train smash. Killing people is bad enough what is written on the weapon doesn't change the bullet.

Yes I think you should both blog it while you're hot to trot.
860 Mike Trapido  [ Thursday, January 21, 2010 | 9:58:07 AM ]
What we do when we use something like that is take what analysts are saying and put them into a form which we believe is a better presentation.

Where we change an article from the wires or a group of them - we credit source and admit input.

859 Mike Trapido  [ Thursday, January 21, 2010 | 9:56:00 AM ]
Not arguing.

Go to Google (can't give URL - comments rejects them).

Type "sights with Bible incriptions".

Then blog rather than comment because it will give you a far bigger audience.

Before 1994 we had religious tolerance and inter faith co-operation in this country.

Time to get it back!

Mike,
I noted Sapa/RS. Did you not write "the problem is twofold"? If you did, then there is an implication that you concur.
856 Bernie Madoff  [ Thursday, January 21, 2010 | 9:49:14 AM ]
Mike,
How angrily are Muslim groups in America reacting to the Jihad that is being waged against America?
855 Mike Trapido  [ Thursday, January 21, 2010 | 9:48:00 AM ]
Bernie & Lyndall the above is not politically correct it is what the two sides are claiming.

If you have issues with the news wires take on the subject then you both have platforms to address them.

The view of the US, Britain and NZ are as give by them not the RS.

The Muslim view - which will grow infinitely louder - is theirs not ours.

This is not an opinion piece.
853 Bernie Madoff  [ Thursday, January 21, 2010 | 9:37:17 AM ]
Mike,
Let us be quite clear .. Radical Islam is at war with the Judeo/Christian western world. Suicide bombers etc are waging Jihad.

American troops in Afghanistan continually receive Christian religious guidance and suppost from pastors who are employed by the army. I suppose that the logic is that you need all the spiritual support that you can get in time of war. There is surely nothing wrong in that?

The enemy are fighting in the name of Islam, and yet America (a predominantly Christian country) is not even allowed to have JN8:12 etched into its rifle sights?

It is about time that people like yourself understood what the war is about. Unfortunately politically correct mumbo-jumbo, has
erased all rationality.

852 Mike Trapido  [ Thursday, January 21, 2010 | 9:36:09 AM ]
Oh but they do object and they are very angry about it as well.
851 Lyndall Beddy  [ Thursday, January 21, 2010 | 9:24:05 AM ]
Don't be such wankers.

As long as they stick to ONLY the words of Christ, how can the Muslims object?

They regard him as the second greatest prophet remember.
