DA, ANC welcome of Zuma's apology a formula for future engagement

By Michael Trapido ;

The Democratic Alliance and African National Congress have both issued statements welcoming President Jacob Zuma's apology that he "deeply regretted" the pain he caused his family, the ANC and South Africans after revelations that he fathered a child out of wedlock.

In her response to Zuma's apology on Saturday Helen Zille, demonstrated why she is considered by so many to be such an outstanding leader :

" Zuma must now match words with deeds... The Democratic Alliance welcomes President Zuma's apology to the South African public. But words are not enough, he must now focus on repairing the damage he has done to the fight against HIV/Aids. It is worth recalling that Jacob Zuma has apologised in exactly these terms before. He must show that his deeds match his words. Leadership is as leadership does."

Her willingness to show forgiveness, calling the President out on his failure to live up to his previous promise and demand that Zuma begin to repair the damage he has done to the HIV/Aids campaign is of the stuff that top world leaders are made of. It balances compassion with responsibility and really is a credit to her and the party.

In turn the ANC too are showing remarkable progress in their response.

Yesterday a close Zuma loyalist confirmed to the Saturday Star that the ANC leaders and Zuma entered a "pact" shortly after his election as party president at Polokwane in 2007, and that he was warned not to embarrass the ANC with revelations similar to his 2006 rape trial. That pact was broken and the source confirmed that the ANC senior leaders while publicly loyal were very perturbed by the revelations.

This came a day after they released a statement saying that the ANC had taken note of the criticisms of the public and the media and needed a short break to consider them.

This was followed by a full blown apology by the President, rather than an apology plus blame game, and the acceptance thereof by the ANC and the Democratic Alliance.

This does not mean that everything in the whole world is hunk dory and we can now dance around a tree and go home for apple pie.

It actually means something far more important.

It demonstrates a formula founded in honesty, which recognizes problems and attempts to deal with them, as opposed to bluster and trying to deflect blame onto others, will bring about worthwhile solutions rather than deep division.

More importantly it will earn the respect of South Africans and the international community.

Lyndall,
I will "belt up" when you and "Poor Old Tom" leave SA and swim towards The South Pole. Of course, it will not be long before you are forced to emigrate.

So please send me some photos of you, and Tom, with The Penguins. I want to stick them in my photo album.

(Of course you will be free to lecture the penguins but don't bore them to death as the animal rights activists will arrest you)

This aspect of African culture is why there is so much fraud and corruption, and why almost all their graduates emigrate.

Zuma has a large family, but much larger if you consider that any of the children of his fallen comrades can call upon him as father. Remember Zuma's daughter said at the rape trial that there were always people at his house asking for money. That is why he could not stay within his income, and why he needed the Shaiks

If you have a job and won't help a family member of this extended family you are ostracised - so often when the don't have money they give them jobs (which they are not qualified for) instead..

Then the graduates can't get jobs; and if they can the whole family descend on them for support.

If they are going to be ostracised anyhow they might as well emigrate.

Don't expect Mbeki to understand . He (like Winnie Mandela and Bishop Tutu) is Mfengu (Fingo) the first of the tribes to lose their culture and become westernised (like the American blacks)

You would know these things if you read the books that I recommend.

It is also probable that the fathers of Zuma's existing wives, and the one to come with whom he has exchanged gifts, are not happy either.

In African culture a marriage is not between a man and a woman but between families.

Bernie

Do belt up -you are just repeating the same argument, which has already been refuted over and over again.

In Zulu culture a woman who has a child out of wedlock brings shame on her family; which is why the man has to pay damages to her father.

Also in Zulu culture the child of your friend is your child. Zuma by sleeping with a friend's daughter, twice, has committed incest in their eyes.

Forget about Zuma and the mother - think of Irwin Khosa. Zuma is lucky to be alive!

Mike,

You are trying to stuff the morality of Glenhazel down the throat of a polygamous President.

Nope your belief that a President can behave like this and nothing is wrong is surreal.

It is immoral if one of the parties is married to have sex out of wedlock?

It is immoral for a woman who knows the man is married and President?

Have you considered they might not have told anyone about their HIV tests?
1054 Bernie Madoff  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 12:10:35 PM ]
Mike,

This is totally surreal. I cannot actually believe what I am reading...

A President has to give a promise not to have unprotected sex?

It is "immoral" for a woman in her 30's to have consensual sex?

It is "immoral" to have sex out of wedlock?

(Have you considered that they both might have had HIV tests before having unprotected sex?)
1053 Mike Trapido  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 11:57:26 AM ]
They have broken the promise not to have unprotected sex that Zuma made. They are having sex out of wedlock. etc etc etc

Why does it need a legal "code"?

It was immoral and set a dangerous example in respect of HIV/Aids.

And on and on

Mike,
I would not dream of writing about your sex-life on this blog. Of course, if I knew much about it, you would definitely give me the freedom of expression to do so. But it is none of my business and I would, out of common human decency, refrain from doing so. Even if your wife gave me all the details.

Mike,

Ms Khoza, an unmarried woman in her 30's, meets Zuma. She is an intelligent banking executive. And she is not entitled to decide who she wants to sleep with?

What legal code have they broken?
1050 Mike Trapido  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 11:37:13 AM ]
Absolutely.

Mike,
You can publish your views if you so wish.

However, I think that you are writing nonsense. Has it occurred to you that Ms Khoza might have wanted to have a child with Zuma? Are you seriously suggesting that this is wrong?
1048 Mike Trapido  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 11:15:49 AM ]
Bernie - YOU anti-freedom of the press?
1047 Bernie Madoff  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 11:12:59 AM ]
Mike,
Obviously, there is a lot of "tut-tutting" re JZ and his concubine. But it is mainly based on jealousy. JZ has been having consensual sex with adult women. He is not banging young boys.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what he is doing. It isn't even your business.
1046 Mike Trapido  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 11:08:22 AM ]
No Bernie it means that where you have a problem deal with it honestly and without deflecting blame and you might achieve far more than lashing out.
1045 Bernie Madoff  [ Sunday, February 07, 2010 | 11:05:22 AM ]
Mike,
Is Helen Zille going to monitor JZ's sex life? This is getting beyond meshuggah and reminds me of the investigation into Clinton's sex life (probably master-minded by the sex-less Hilary).
