An explosion at the Kleen Energy Plant in Middletown, Connecticut has left 2 people dead and over 250 injured. Latest reports from local media in the area indicate that men were working on a gas supply line when it is believed to have exploded. Around 50 people were on duty at the plant when the explosion occured.

Emergency crews were pulling casualties from the wreckage and transporting them to various hospitals. Over 30 ambulances were despatched to the accident scene.

The State's emergency procedures were put into action and all hospitals in the area placed on alert. It is thought that the death toll could escalate, with some reports indicating as many as 34 dead.

Authorities cannot confirm that the gas pipeline was responsible for the blast which sent a fireball over 40 meters into the air.
