Live : South Africa close on victory as Tendulkar hits 100 and outTuesday, February 09, 2010 | Comments: 0
The South African Proteas require a further 4 wickets and India nothing short of a batting miracle on the fourth day of the 1st Test being fought out in Nagpur.
After being asked to follow on yesterday by skipper Graeme Smith India lost 2 wickets overnight when Gambir was bowled by Morkel for 1 and Dale Steyn removed the deadly Sehwag for 16 after he was caught by Smith. The first to go this morning was Vijay who was caught going for the sweep but only managing to top edge it to fine-leg where he was taken by Morkel off the bowling of Harris for 32. India were now 96 for 3. Badrinath was caught Boucher off the bowling of Parnell for 6 from a ball delivered from round the stump which landed full and held its line. Badrinath lunged at it caught the outside edge and presented it to Boucher leaving India on 122/4. The little master Sachin Tendulkar along with skipper Dhoni then put on a hard-fought 5th wicket partnership of 70. Tendulkar going to his 100 before Harris struck again. Bowling over the wicket and outside leg stump Tendulkar tried to go for the sweep only for the ball to cut inwards, bounce off his thigh pad, onto the elbow guard and land on the stumps. Dhoni was joined by Wriddhiman Saha before Harris claimed his 3rd wicket, that of the Indian skipper, caught De Villiers for 25. India now 209 for 6 It leaves India still 116 runs short of making South Africa bat again and has all the markings of an innings defeat. For those of you who are at work and can't watch the Test we include the Cricinfo running scoreboard . Battle is going to be for man of the match with Steyn getting 7 wickets and Amla a double ton. Might well be a joint award. UPDATE : ------------ South Africa has won the 1st Test by an innings and 6 runs. Amla was named man of the match. Dale Steyn picked up 3 wickets giving him an overall 10 for 108
