Fresh from an election that cost the lives of 38 people, Iraq has today been rocked by yet another bombing.

News reports indicate that a suicide bomber has exploded a car in the city of Fallujah, 50km west of Baghdad in the western province of Anbar. Officials say the death toll is currently sitting at seven people with a further dozen injured in the blast. Local police official Bashar Mohammed told global news agencies that the suicide bomber had blown up the vehicle amid a crowd of workers.

This comes as results from last weeks’ election are still being tallied. Incumbent Prime Minister Nouri Maliki’s party is said to be leading in seven of the eighteen provinces. Final results are expected later this week following which there will be a period for lodging appeals and contests. A credible and universdally accepted election is seen as key for stability and progress towards a withdrawal of foreign troops in Iraq.
